RS Elections: Assam LOP sends legal notice to AIUDFMLA for ‘cross voting’.

Guwahati: Opposition leader in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia on Thursday slapped a legal notice on AIUDF MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya for allegedly saying that the recent Rajya Sabha elections in the state In Congress, 7-8 members of the Assembly have voted for the ruling BJP candidates.

The senior Congress leader demanded an unconditional public apology and withdrawal of Barbhuiya’s statement within seven days of receipt of the notice.

Saikia’s lawyer Sarfraz Nawaz stressed in the notice that the Congress leader would initiate “appropriate criminal and civil proceedings” against Barbhuiya if he did not comply.

Barbhuiya did not respond to repeated calls for comment on the legal notice.

Elections for the two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam were held on March 31 with the ruling coalition candidates, Pabitra Margarita of the BJP and Rwngwra Narzary of the UPPL, emerging winners. The opposition had fielded a joint candidate – outgoing Congress MP Ripin Bora.

Margareta, whose victory was certain, received 46 votes, while Narzary received 44 and Bora 35 votes. All the 126 MLAs of the Assam Assembly cast their votes and one vote was found invalid.

“After announcing the results of the two Rajya Sabha elections, you addressed a press conference in which you alleged that 7-8 Congress MLAs voted for the BJP.”

“You further alleged that the Congress party played a game with Sri (Prithviraj Prabhakar) Sathe and Sri Akhal Gogoi (Independent MLA) led by Sri Bhupin Bora,” the notice said.

Barbhuiya had also alleged that “cash packets and packets” would be recovered if the houses of close associates of the 60s, who are AICC secretaries and in-charge of Assam, were searched.

Saikia said in a legal notice that the Congress had faced public embarrassment over Barbhuiya’s “false, defamatory and ridiculous statement”.

The notice emphasized, “In addition to incurring civic liability for damages from such acts, your actions attract penal provisions under the Penal Code of India and the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the rules made thereunder.” . ”

The Congress had earlier alleged that the AIUDF had cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha elections and voted for the candidates of the ruling BJP-led coalition.
