Rollback Hill Areas Committee resolution soon, TYCM demanded

Imphal: The Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM) too has demanded withdrawal of resolution number 59/2024 passed by the Hill Areas Committee (HAC) on October 14, 2024.

The resolution proposes creation of temporary committees for each ADC comprising 20 members – 18 of whom would be selected from amongst former ADC Members, local governance experts and prominent intellectuals along with two Government nominees.

Saying this resolution violates the provisions of The Manipur (Hill Areas) District Councils Act, 1971, the TYCM has asserted that these measures are illogical and unconstitutional apart from causing confusion among tribal communities.

These actions attempt to eradicate and abolish the principles and spirit of the 1971 Act, which was established to ensure appropriate representation in local self-government.

The decision of the HAC misleads the tribal populace and invites unnecessary complications, the TYCM said in a press release.

The tribal communities of Manipur will not accept this decision, as it poses a threat to their welfare and undermines democratic processes, it said.

It then urged the Government of Manipur and the concerned authorities to disregard the particular resolution, as it is inconsistent with existing legal frameworks and detrimental to the interests of tribal communities.

If the Government of Manipur attempts to execute or proceed on the basis of the said resolution, the TYCM will challenge it in Court, it added.
