Regrouping of GNLA in Garo Hills, Meghalaya police launches probe

Shillong: The Meghalaya police have launched an investigation in response to a press release that was widely circulated on social media, alleging the resurgence of the once-feared Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in the Garo Hills.
A press release signed by alleged GNLA-regroup chairman Goera Pantora Sangma on February 7 last year claimed reforms of the GNLA, outlining resolutions aimed at addressing issues such as corruption and regionalisation. I have to implement welfare schemes for the underprivileged.
Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, cast doubt on the veracity of the report but confirmed that law enforcement agencies would prevent any attempt by the defunct group to regroup.
“Our police force is ready to thwart such attempts,” declared the Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister, stressing the strengthening of security intelligence.
Tynsong assured, “Police presence is strong on the ground. Rest assured, regrouping will be prevented.

Opposition MLA Saleng Sangma urged the Meghalaya government to ascertain the truth of the social media release.
He demanded immediate action, demanding immediate arrest of those responsible for spreading the post.
“The Congress party will consider the issue and may raise it in the Assembly,” Sangma added.
