Shillong: The BJP in Meghalaya was left red-faced when party legislators AL Hek and Sanbor Shullai— criticized by social organizations in the hill state — ditched traditional courtesies in favor of trade by non-tribals. The system has been violated.
“We have seen in the paper that a resolution has been signed by two legislators Hek and Shullai. It is in strict violation of the Council’s Area Administration Act,” Chief Executive Member of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council Pyniaid Syiem told PTI.
Heck, one of the two MLAs, is a cabinet minister in the current Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government backed by the BJP.
The two BJP MLAs had signed a resolution directing the president of the then Refugee Rehabilitation Colony Welfare Committee in Rynjah area of the city to issue NOCs to non-tribals for trade and all-purpose residences. Permission was granted to provide the certificate.
RR Colony is a settlement of about 250 houses built for those who fled Bangladesh during the 1971 war, mostly Hindu families.
According to the tribal council CEM, such a resolution violates the authority given by the council to the traditional darbars as the area falls under the jurisdiction of Dorbar Shnong of Rynjah, which is recognized by the council.
Several organizations have accused the BJP of trying to interfere with the traditions of tribal people in the state.
The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People believes that MLAs should refrain from such callous and irresponsible acts that devalue the character of our traditional institutions.
The FKJGP also issued a stern warning against the RRWC to stop interfering in matters related to issuance of NOCs or RCs to the people of the area.
“The RRWS must comply with the Hima Mylliem notification in 2019 which declared the colony as Them Rynjah or else the federation will be forced to take a different path to protect our culture and tradition,” FKJGP said.
The KHADC chief also reiterated that while the council as a welfare society has no intention of interfering with religious rights, he added, “As far as the administration is concerned, we will ensure that That the residents of the area should follow the land rules. This is Khasi Hills and not Bangladesh or West Bengal and the 2019 notification stands till date,” said Syiem.
Meanwhile, when asked for clarification, Heck feigned ignorance on the subject.
“There is no question of helping non-tribals only. We are here to help all the people of the state,” he said.
“There is no question of violating tradition or council. We help everyone who needs our help. That is the responsibility of the leaders and the BJP.”
