Aizawl: The opposition Congress on Friday won the contested Rengakshya constituency in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC), an official said.
The election to the Rengkashya seat was postponed due to the death of a BJP candidate and was held on May 17, was killed allegedlyin a collision on May 4 between BJP and Mizo National Front (MNF) workers.
According to the poll results announced by the State Election Commission on Friday, Congress candidate Doyamoy Daveng Chakma has been declared the winner for the Rangkashya seat and his nearest rival Prema Ranjan Chakma of MNF by a margin of 572 votes.
A total of 93.13 voters cast their votes in the elections held on May 17.
Elections to the 20-member CADC on May 9 resulted in a mandate breakdown and the MNF emerged as the single largest party, winning 10 seats.
BJP won 5 seats and Congress won 4 seats. However, 3 BJP members and 2 Congress members had joined the MNF recently, taking the party’s total strength to 15.
MNF has submitted its claim to form the government on May 12.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Mizoram is yet to approve the formation of a government in council.
CADC was established under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in 1972 for the Chakma tribals in Mizoram.
