Rape, murder at RG Kar medical college, students stage protest

Agartala: In a show of solidarity with the victim of the recent tragedy at Radha Gobinda Kar Medical College in West Bengal, the doctors and students of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GB Pant Hospital in Tripura staged a protest on Tuesday.

They demanded a thorough investigation and called for the resignation of the officials implicated in the incident.

The protest comes in the wake of the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old second-year postgraduate student at RG Kar Medical College. Addressing the media, doctors and students from AGMC and GB Pant Hospital expressed their outrage over the tragic event that occurred on August 9, involving a female resident doctor.

The demonstrators, who also held a rally within the hospital premises, emphasized the need for justice. “We demand a transparent investigation into this case and the implementation of central policies to prevent such heinous crimes. We are also calling for the resignation of the officials responsible for this incident,” said one of the protesting doctors.

A resident doctor at AGMC, expressed the collective grief and determination of the medical community. “We stand united with our nation and our entire fraternity in this matter. The gravity of this crime has shocked us all, and we urge the Centre to take action.

The demands being raised across the nation, including a transparent probe and the resignation of those involved, must be addressed. This is highly unacceptable,” she stated.

In response to the incident, the protesting doctors and students have suspended their work until 5 PM. Undergraduate students are also boycotting their classes, although emergency and outpatient services will continue to operate.
