At Matia Transit Camp in Golpara, where the child marriage accused are kept, the situation turned violent when relatives and families of the accused went there to meet them. Relatives and wives of the accused staged a ruckus outside the transit camp. The wives protested and demanded the police to release their husbands. Some said they did not want to benefit from any government scheme and only wanted their husbands. It may be noted that hundreds of parents, relatives and wives from Dhubri, Barpeta, Kamrup, Bongaigaon districts of Lower Assam had gathered in front of the detention camps to meet the man arrested by the police for child marriage.
The Matia Transit Camp in Goalpara and a stadium in Silchar have been converted by the Assam government into makeshift jails to hold more than 2,400 people arrested for marrying girls below the age of 18 or encouraging such marriages. .
A total of 2528 people have been arrested across the state in what can be called the biggest crackdown on child marriage in Assam so far.
Assam Police’s official spokesperson, IG (Law and Order) Prashantha Kumar Bhuyan said on February 6, “The Assam government has converted the Matia transit camp and a stadium in Silchar into makeshift jails as jails in a few districts becomes overcrowded. The transit camp can accommodate 3,000 people. The Matia transit camp, which was built for foreigners in Goalpara, and the NATRiP in Silchar converted into temporary prisons to house arrested persons. was made.”
Speaking to the Media, Cachar SP Numal Mahatta said that 80 people have been arrested in Cachar so far and the operation is on. The number is increasing as Kutch borders Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya so many criminals have infiltrated into neighboring states. The SP added that they are in touch with their counterparts and since the government has ordered the construction of transit camps as the jail space is overcrowded, all necessary arrangements have been taken care of. SP Mahatta also informed that the place will house the prisoners of the three districts of Valley Barak.
