Proposed solidarity protest in support of Manipur tribals cancelled

Aizawl: A Mizoram civil society group has canceled its proposed solidarity protest in support of the Zoroastrians affected by communal violence in Manipur.
Mizoram’s NGO Coordination Committee, a group of major civil society organizations and student bodies headed by the influential Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA), had earlier announced that Kuki -Hmar-Zomi-Mizo will hold a massive protest in solidarity with Mizo or Zo Community in Manipur at Aizawl on June 23.
It also appealed to its partner civil society organizations in the state to hold simultaneous demonstrations in their respective jurisdictions on the same day.

CYMA General Secretary Llanant Lunga said Saturday’s coordination committee meeting decided to cancel the proposed solidarity protest in view of the current situation in the neighboring state.
Meanwhile, at least 190 people have fled to Mizoram from conflict-torn Manipur in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of displaced people taking shelter in the state to 11,693, according to the state’s home department.

The government and the village have set up 35 relief camps.
However, the majority of displaced persons belong to the Zo ethnic group, sheltered by their relatives while others live in rented houses.

CYMA has also set up a transit camp on its premises in Aizawl. However, the majority of displaced persons belong to ethnic Zo tribes, sheltered by their relatives while others live on rent. Live in houses.

A month ago, more than 100 people lost their lives in ethnic violence between the majority Meiti and minority Kuki communities in Manipur.

The government has imposed a curfew in 11 districts and banned the internet to curb the spread of rumors in the state.
Clashes first erupted on May 3 when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized by the Meitei community in the hill districts to protest against their demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis constitute about 53% of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. The tribals – Nagas and Kukis – constitute another 40 percent of the population and live in the hilly districts.
