Police issues legal warning to those protesting against CAA pursuit

Guwahati: The central government’s decision to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 on Monday has led to protests across the state.
The new CAA laws will grant citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
A strong reaction is now being seen in Assam on this decision. On the other hand, Guwahati Police has warned against the damages caused during the protest and said that legal action will be taken against the violators.
Several organizations and opposition parties in Assam have intensified their protest against the CAA.
The All Assam Students Union (AASU) and other groups are taking out rallies across the state and burning copies of the CAA.
According to reports, the protesters have expressed their determination to continue their peaceful and democratic opposition.

Legal action, including a Supreme Court petition, is being considered by protesters to challenge the implementation of the CAA.
Guwahati Police has issued a warning to the agitating parties organizing “Sarbat Mukhartal (Complete Strike)”.

It has said that legal action will be taken if there is any “damage to public/private property including Railway and National Highway properties or injury to any citizen caused”.

“Legal action under appropriate provisions of law including the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984 will be initiated against you and the total cost of damage to public and private properties will be recovered from you and your Organization,” it added.
