Police complaint in Assam against Mehwa Moitra for 'Gogoi' tweet

Police complaint in Assam against Mehwa Moitra for ‘Gogoi’ tweet that allegedly linked sexual harassment with an Assamese surname.

A local outfit, Jatiya Sangrami Sena, filed a written complaint alleging that Moitra had insulted the entire Assamese community with her tweet and demanded an unconditional apology from her.
Moitra had allegedly posted a tweet referring to a list of unparliamentary words.

The first of my new Twitter series on unparliamentary word changes. The forbidden word – substitute for sexual harassment – Mr Gogoi, he reportedly wrote on Thursday.
This led to criticism, especially from Assamese netizens. Netizens pointed out that Gogoi is the surname of a large section of the Assamese people and took the tweet as an insult to the entire community.

The TMC leader had made it clear on Friday that she was not implicating the Gogoi community.

Just for those Sanghis twisting that I targeted all Gogois, let me spell it out: Mr. Ranjan Gogoi. Hon’ble MP, Rajya Sabha, he posted on the micro-blogging site.
A former Supreme Court staffer had in 2019 accused Gogoi. Country’s chief justice, of sexual harassment and the apex court had taken suo motu notice of the matter.

A three-judge in-house committee later gave Gogoi a clean chit.

The Jatiya Sangrami Sena has also threatened that the TMC will not be allowed to hold any meetings or rallies in Upper Assam if it fails to apologize for its comments.
A police official confirmed that a written complaint against Moitra, who had created a ruckus with her Goddess Kali comment, was received on Friday but no FIR has been registered yet.

Complaint against Mehwa Moitra has been lodged at Shivsagar Sadar Police Station. We are testing it. He said that no case has been registered yet.

The unparliamentary word used by Mahua Moitra is an insult to all the people of Assam. He should apologize for this,” BJP state spokesperson Momin Awal said in a statement in Guwahati.

He said that state TMC president Ripun Bora should also apologize to the people for this comment.
