Guwahati: Congress leader Debbarta Saikia on Sunday filed a police complaint against AIUDF supremo and Lok Sabha MP from Assam Badruddin Ajmal over his remarks allegedly targeting the Hindu community, and His controversial comments led to an increase in cases dismissed.
Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly Saikia filed a complaint against Ajmal at Samalogori police station in Shivsagar district.
He said Ajmal’s comments “intentionally created feelings of unrest or enmity, hatred or malice towards the Hindu population, particularly the Hindu women of India”.
Saikia claimed that the remarks “fomented enmity between different groups on the basis of religion”, and the situation could worsen if strict action was not taken against Ajmal.
The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has already filed complaints against the Dhubri MP in various parts of the state, while the Trinamool Congress’ youth wing also submitted a written submission to the police on the matter on Saturday.
In an interview to a media house on Friday, Ajmal had made comments about women and Hindu men as well as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, allegedly in response to the Chief Minister’s comment on ‘love jihad’. .
The perfume baron, revered as a ‘Maulana’, reportedly advised Hindus to marry young to have more children, like Muslims.
As the remarks sparked a backlash, the MP apologized on Saturday and said he was “embarrassed” by the controversy.
However, Ajmal maintained that his comments were distorted and did not target any community.
Confirming the receipt of the complaints, the police said that an investigation into the matter has been initiated.
