Imphal: The Global Manipur Federation has issued a statement condemning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the ongoing clashes in Manipur since May 3.
In the statement, the federation said, “Urgent pleas for Prime Minister Modi’s attention to the ongoing crisis in Manipur, for an uninterrupted break of 50 days and counting, have fallen on deaf ears. Manipur is engulfed in a fire of despair. Not a single word escaped his lips as he left for the U.N. This silence has created a lot of anxiety among people, politicians and civil societies across the state, as their concerns are still lingering.
Thousands of people, including children, women and the elderly, are affected by the ongoing crisis in Manipur since May. More than 150 lives were lost, more than 3000 houses were destroyed and property was extensively damaged. Shockingly, more than 50,000 people find themselves seeking refuge in their own country, which is like genuine refugees.
Criticizing the lack of efforts by the central government, the federation said the civilian population is now resorting to arming themselves. He said that women in relief camps are now asking for guns to protect their homes and families.
Questioning the governments failure, the federation asked, “How can New Delhi fail to act effectively even after deploying 40,000 additional security forces personnel to control the violence?”
“Manipur urgently needs confidence-building measures (CBM). Without CBM, governments, especially the government of Manipur, face increasing challenges in achieving peace,” the statement added. Will continue to do so. To solve this problem, an enabling environment must be created by disarming militants in and around the foothills.”
