Over Nijjar’ murder case Canada withdraws 41 diplomats from India
Canada has recalled 41 diplomats from India following a dispute over the killing of a Khalistani terrorist, according to Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly. It said on Thursday that Canada would not respond with similar measures.
Joly said India had unilaterally threatened to withdraw the diplomats’ official status by Friday if they did not leave the country. She termed the move as ‘irrational, unprecedented and a clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations’.
She added that given the implications of India’s actions on the security of Canadian diplomats, their safe exit from India was ensured.
Joly asserted that if the principle of diplomatic immunity was violated, no diplomat would be safe globally, so Canada would not retaliate. There were 41 diplomats along with 42 dependents.
Last month, New Delhi asked Ottawa to reduce its diplomatic presence after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged a possible link between Indian agents and the June killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was killed in a Vancouver suburb. He was killed outside a Gurdwara in the area.
India has dismissed as absurd Trudeau’s suspicions that its agents were involved in Nijjar’s murder.
