Over naked video of women INDIA turns heat on BJP, ask PM Modi

Imphal: A resurgent Congress-led alliance – the Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (India) has taken heat from the ruling BJP over the ongoing crisis in the northeastern state of Manipur.
Opposition parties across India on Thursday (July 20) launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over the crisis in Manipur on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament.
The attack by opposition parties on the ruling BJP-led NDA government at the Center followed nationwide outrage over a video showing two Kuki women in Manipur being stripped, molested and gang-raped by a mob of naked men.
Congress-led India has questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the sorry state of affairs in the northeastern state of Manipur and his silence on the crisis over the past nearly three months.
Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who earlier visited the violence-torn northeastern state of Manipur, slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence and inaction on violence in the state.
Rahul Gandhi said: “Prime Minister’s silence and inaction has led Manipur to chaos. India will not remain silent while the idea of India is under attack in Manipur. We stand with the people of Manipur. Peace is the only way forward.”
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also condemned the violence and rape of two Kuki women in Manipur, calling it a “heinous act”.
Manipur incident is very shameful and condemnable. Such heinous behavior cannot be tolerated in Indian society. The situation in Manipur is becoming very alarming. I appeal to the Prime Minister to pay attention to the situation in Manipur,” Kejriwal said.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader MK Stalin also issued a statement condemning the rape of two Kuki women in Manipur and demanded the central government’s intervention to restore peace in the state.
Stalin said: “Absolutely heartbroken and horrified by the horrific violence against women in Manipur. Where is our collective conscience? Hatred and venom are uprooting the spirit of humanity. Central government should take all necessary steps to restore peace in Manipur.”
TMC MP Mahua Moitra termed the Modi-led BJP government as ‘satanic’, saying: “Shameful and horrified at the scene in Manipur. When will this satanic government take responsibility? When will the Manipur CM resign? When will Monguru (Modi) stop by state dinners abroad and talk about Manipur?”
Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi solely for the pathetic law and order situation in Manipur, where he said democracy has been led to “mobcracy” rule.
“Humanity is dead in Manipur. The Modi government and the BJP have destroyed the fragile social fabric of the state and turned democracy and the rule of law into a mobocracy. Narendra Modi ji, India will never forgive your silence,” said Kharge.
After mounting pressure on the PM and the BJP-led central government over the horrific situation in Manipur, Narendra Modi finally broke his silence after 77 days and spoke about the ongoing violence in Manipur.
PM Modi said that 140 crore Indians were shamed by the incident, where two Kuki women were stripped naked by a mob of Meitei men in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on May 4.

While the incident is almost two months old, the prime minister made the statement only after the video of the victims surfaced online.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address expressed deep ‘sorrow’ and promised that the culprits would face the full force of the law.

PM Modi said his heart was “full of pain and anger” after the incident.

“What has happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven”, he added.
The Prime Minister further assured that justice will prevail and no culprit involved in this heinous crime will be spared.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said the state government was “considering the possibility of death penalty” for those involved in stripping the two Kuki women.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also said that a “thorough investigation” into the matter was underway.
“A thorough investigation is currently underway and we will ensure that strict action is taken against all the culprits, including consideration of the possibility of death penalty,” Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh said.
It may be noted that a disturbing video surfaced on social media showing two Kuki women being paraded naked on the street by a group of men from the Meitei community.
The victims were also allegedly gang-raped in a nearby farm.

The disturbing video shows a mob of men molesting two helpless Kuki women as they are being forcibly taken to a paddy field.
Reacting to the video, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said: “My heart goes out to the two women who were treated in the most disrespectful and inhuman manner, as shown in the distressing video that surfaced yesterday.”
Notably, the Manipur Police has already arrested one person in connection with the case on Thursday (July 20) morning.
“After taking suo motu notice of the incident soon after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung into action and made the first arrest this morning,” said Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh.
He added: “Know this, there is absolutely no place for such despicable acts in our society.”

Meanwhile, a day after a disturbing video of two kooky women being paraded naked by a mob in Manipur went viral, the Supreme Court slammed it as a “total constitutional failure”.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Thursday (July 20) called on the government to take immediate action to ensure the safety of women in the region and sought regular updates on the steps being taken.
Warning of Supreme Court intervention if the government fails to act, the CJI fixed July 28 to take up the case.
