Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Friday demanded the resignation of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that he had misused his power for personal gain.
Addressing a press conference on the government grant disbursement and land acquisition controversy in Assam, MP Gogoi criticized the rapid acquisition of a large agricultural land plot by a media house owned by the Chief Minister’s family and its subsequent acquisition. Gogoi raised serious ethical questions about this allocation, arguing that government subsidies should go to local entrepreneurs and farmers in need.

Gogoi expressed concern about the speed and nature of these transactions, stressing the need for a thorough inquiry to maintain transparency and uphold ethical standards.

In the interest of accountability and transparency, Gogoi demanded Chief Minister Sarma to disclose the exact amount, if any, received by M/S Pride East Entertainment in the form of grants and subsidies from the Assam state government.
He stressed the importance of applying the same ethical standards to grants by the Central and State Governments, arguing that if accepting money as a grant from the Central Government is considered unethical, then the accused on behalf of the State Government. Grants to the company should also be treated similarly.

Gogoi also expressed the concern of the people of Assam who are suffering from inflation.
He argued that the burden of excessive GST, expensive gas cylinders and toll tax should not fall on the shoulders of the public to benefit a company owned by the chief minister’s family.

On the possibility of defamation proceedings, Gogoi welcomed any legal action and assured that the accused company would be required to produce all relevant documents, including land and bank records, in court. They believe that this will clarify the situation.
