Imphal: Demonstrating outrage, several students and teachers of Moirang Multi-Purpose Higher Secondary School in Manipur’s Bishnupur district staged a sit-in on Friday in response to the tragic killing of 19-year-old Mayengbam Rickey Meitei.
A festoon hung at the school gate read, “We strongly condemn the killing of Mayengbam Rickey Meitei.. We want peace not war. Restore normalcy. Resume normal classes.”
Meitei, a Class 12 student of MM Higher Secondary School in Moirang, was shot dead by unknown assailants while returning to a relief camp on a two-wheeler where isr mother was looking for sheltered.
The incident took place on Friday morning, and Meitei succumbed to five bullet wounds on the spot.
The teachers, non-teaching staff and students of the school staged a sit-in at the gate of the school demanding immediate justice.
A two-minute silence was observed for the repose of the soul of the deceased. Lingthoingamabi, a student, expressed the students’ demand for justice and an early resolution of the communal clashes that have been ongoing for the past two months in the state.
At the same time, women from Moirang and Kwakta villages also started protests in response to Meitei’s murder, blocking the road connecting Moirang with Churachundur district.
During the blockade, the Assam Rifles personnel who came in the vehicles resorted to baton charge, as a result of which five women were injured.
The protesters also condemned the seizure of the Indian National Army School by the Assam Rifles in Kwakta.
In light of the situation, local MLA Shanti appealed to Chief Minister N Biren Singh, urging him to facilitate the vacation of the school premises occupied by the Assam Rifles in the absence of proper documents.
