mo A tense situation erupted on Thursday night in Rongajan area near the Kakopathar-Makum bypass road in Tinsukia when 20 to 25 (approx) wild elephants were transported from the Assam-Arunachal border in 49 trucks to Jamnagar in Gujarat.
A huge crowd gathered on the bypass road and blocked the highway for several hours demanding an explanation for the alleged migration of wild elephants.
Talking to the media, a local said, “We suspect that these elephants are being smuggled from the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in around 49 trucks. Not only Arunachal but also Assam elephants are loaded on these trucks. Goes.Furthermore all the trucks have Gujarat number plates.There are some fishes.So we request Assam Govt to clarify this issue.
Meanwhile, a police team from Tinsukia reached the spot and brought the situation under control and asked the crowd to disperse to maintain law and order situation.
The police then moved the trucks to a safe area.
A senior police official claimed that the relocation of the elephants was done on the direction of the Guwahati High Court.
