Over charges of Nijjar Singh murder, Canada oust Indian diplomat
Canada has expelled a high-ranking Indian diplomat following “credible allegations” of Indian government involvement in the killing of Canadian citizen and Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in Parliament that Canadian security agencies are actively investigating the allegations. Trudeau expressed his government’s commitment to holding those responsible for Najjar’s murder accountable.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh leader in British Columbia, was shot to death in June by two masked gunmen in his truck outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, B.C. His killing shocked and angered the large Sikh community in Canada, which numbers in the millions.
India had earlier termed Nijjar a terrorist threat and linked him to the Sikh separatist movement.
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly has confirmed the expulsion of the Indian diplomat, revealing that the person in question is the head of the Indian intelligence agency in Canada. Jolly emphasized that Canada is committed to uncovering the truth behind Nijjar’s murder.
