Over attack on unarmed civilians Women protesters slam RAF
Manipur: A number of women staged a dharna at Brahmapur Lalji Lakpa Leikai Community Hall, Imphal on Sunday, condemning the physical assault by Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel on unarmed protesters in Bamon Leikai area on June 16.
It should be noted that the RAF has been embroiled in various allegations of inhuman physical assault on unarmed protesters since its deployment in Imphal.
A series of protests have recently been launched condemning the RAF’s mob control measures. This is not the first time the RAF has been caught in the violent limelight. A recent video footage of RAF personnel destroying parked civilian vehicles and torching a Muslim-owned meat shop in Imphal went viral on social media.
The latest victim of their rampage is 45-year-old Ningombam Sunil of Lalji Lakpa Leikai, Brahmapur, who was allegedly attacked by RAF personnel at his residence on June 16 around 8:30 pm.
Sunil was allegedly at home when RAF personnel barged into his residence and began assaulting him without questioning.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the sit-in, a protester alleged that RAF personnel locked the doors of the house from outside and started beating Sunil mercilessly.
“We could not do anything as the door was locked from outside. They attacked him and tried to drag him out of the residence premises.
He questioned the authorities whether central forces were deployed in the state to torture or protect unarmed civilians.
He demanded that the central forces be withdrawn from Manipur if they failed to maintain their humanity and protect the unarmed citizens.
He further criticized the central government for failing to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur quickly and said that if they continue to drag out the issue, an all-out violent outbreak is inevitable.
