Tiddim: Imphal West faced a fresh counter-protest on Saturday after hundreds of women protesters blocked the road and burnt tires demanding the release of volunteers arrested in connection with the burning of Manipur IGP Kabib’s car in the Ghari area of Tiddim Road on July 19.
Around 9.30 am, hundreds of women came out on the road and blocked the road by burning tires in the middle. The women raised anti-government slogans against the arrest of 21 youths from the area for burning the IGP’s car.
A team of Manipur Police led by SP Imphal West Ibomcha rushed to the spot along with a team of Rapid Action Force and fired several tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. The police team also controlled the fire in the middle of the road.
The police had arrested 26 people in connection with the violence in which IGP Kabib’s car was burnt on Tiddim Road near Ghari on July 19.
Of them, 5 were released on bail and 21 were remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a judicial magistrate. The women demanded the release of all the arrested persons.
