GUWAHATI: The onset of monsoon in the Northeast has also seen an increase in incidents of landslide on National Highway 6, threatening the lifeline of not only Barak Valley but also Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur.
A fresh landslide was reported at the Sonapur tunnel entrance on Thursday morning, trapping several vehicles on both sides of the tunnel. NHAI is said to be working to clear the debris and restore normal traffic.
Frequent landslides in this stretch have once again highlighted the challenges faced by commuters during the monsoon season. The highway was also blocked on Wednesday after a landslide at the same location.
The promised East-West Corridor via Haflong, which was meant to provide an alternative route from Silchar to Guwahati, is yet to be completed.
The Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills District (EJHD) has also issued an advisory in view of the possibility of landslides along the Sonaperidi Tunnel on National Highway 6 as well as the stretch of the highway from Limshanong to Milidur. General public is requested to avoid unnecessary travel on this stretch of highway.
Last Sunday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while reviewing the state’s flood preparedness, directed NHAI officials to deploy their machinery and keep them on standby to deal with any emergency immediately.
