Imphal: Unidentified persons on Saturday attempted to blow up a bridge on NH 37 connecting Imphal to Assam’s Silchar via Jiribam district of Manipur.
Due to the explosions, the bridge was partially damaged, but the traffic of vehicles over the bridge is still going on.
The bridge was constructed at Leinganglon between the villages of Longa Koireng and Beji, under Keithelmanbi Police Station in Kongpokpi District.
Local people heard a loud explosion in these villages. Explosives were also found at the scene. The explosions caused cracks in the tracks under the bridge.
Police say that there was a conspiracy to blow up the bridge with detonators, the accused will be nabbed soon. No organization has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.
The explosion under the bridge came at a time when the Committee of Tribal Unity (COTU), one of Manipur’s powerful tribal organizations, imposed an indefinite economic blockade on two National Highways (NHs) – Imphal Silchar and Imphal Dimapur – on August 18.
COTU is demanding adequate supply of essential commodities in the densely populated areas of Manipur.
Around 300 trucks loaded with goods from Assam and Nagaland to Imphal are stuck on NH 02 at the Nagaland border till date.
The police have increased security in the area and raids are being conducted to find the accused.
