Guwahati: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a plea expressing concern over the recent May 12 transport of 20 elephants from Arunachal Pradesh to Gujarat.
Accepting a PIL filed by advocate Abhir Phukan, a bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala also asked the Ministry of Environment and Forests that ‘Arunachal Pradesh What is the method of transportation of elephants? To the State of Gujarat.’
At least 20 elephants from Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura are being shifted to the Radha Krishna Temple Elephant Trust in Jamnagar, Gujarat, said advocate Abhir Phukan in the petition.
Phukan’s petition highlighted the fact that the migration of these elephants would involve movement of more than 3,400 km by road and in varying geographical and climatic conditions, and that this would jeopardize the health, safety and security of these elephants. Very serious questions arise. A long and difficult journey by road.
Elephants have a very weak thermoregulatory system due to minimal sweat glands. Their body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius and their comfort zone is 25-26 degrees Celsius. A convoy carrying 20 elephants will pass through many places with temperatures of 40-45 degrees Celsius, and any such movement should be monitored,” the petition said.
“Elephant movement in Gujarat, which has a desert-type climate, also raises serious concerns about elephants suffering from heatstroke.”
The petition also claimed that there is no clarification that if elephants are being translocated and rehabilitated, those wild elephants are captured and elephants sent to Don’t know about going.
The Center for Research on Animal Rights (CRAR) has recently expressed concern over the transport of 20 elephants in a convoy of 49 vehicles over a distance of 3000 km from Arunachal Pradesh to Gujarat.

A Supreme Court-appointed High Power Committee (HPC) allowed the transfer of the elephants to Jamnagar’s Radha Krishna Temple Elephant Trust, which was supported by Reliance Industries Limited.
