The Supreme Court, reopening after a 42-day summer vacation, asked the Manipur government for detailed status of measures taken to reduce communal violence in the state as well as rehabilitation camps for displaced and violence-affected people. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud was hearing pleas about violence in Manipur, including the army’s protection and targeting of minority Kuki tribals by an NGO. A request for action against the producing parties was also included.
Appearing for the Center and the Manipur government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that the situation in the state is gradually improving. He said that apart from civil police, there are Manipur Rifles, companies of CAPF, 114 columns of army and Manipur commandos.
He further appealed that the issue should not be given a communal angle. “My learned friend cannot give it a sectarian angle – like Christians or anything else. Real human beings are being dealt with,” he said.
According to lawyer Colin Gonsalves, the situation in Manipur has become “very extreme”. “Unless these armed groups are eliminated, the situation will only get worse.” Last night, three tribesmen were killed and one beheaded, the first tribal beheading. Kukis do not attack.
