Imphal: The European Parliament will hold an urgent debate on the situation in Manipur, where the motion will be debated on July 12 and voted on on July 13.
The development comes after a resolution tabled in the EU Parliament by six parliamentary groups ranging from the Left, European Socialists and Greens to regional parties, conservatives, and centre-right political and Christian groups.
The movement condemned the ongoing violence in Manipur and condemned the nationalist rhetoric deployed by leading members of the BJP party.
The European Parliament further called on the Government of India and local authorities to allow unimpeded humanitarian aid to those affected and to allow independent monitors to investigate.
He urged all parties to exercise restraint and stop inflammatory statements from political leaders to restore confidence and play a neutral role in mediating tensions.
Parliament called on the central government to repeal the AFSPA in line with the recommendations of the UPR as well as the recommendations of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, which called for the restoration of unfettered internet access.

It also called for a regular EU-India human rights dialogue at the highest level to set firm standards and benchmarks for progress and requested that the European Parliament be regularly apprised of developments.
“Instructs its President to forward this resolution to EU institutions, Member States and Indian authorities,” the motion added.
