Aizawl: Two months after India’s worst wave of communal violence in recent decades, Mizoram’s neighboring state of Manipur, Chief Minister Zoramthanga wrote a powerful post on Twitter, wondering when the violence will stop.
“While we hope with much good will, expectation and hope that things will improve, it seems that things have worsened. When will this stop? My condolences to our Manipuri Zoroastrian brothers, My continued prayers to those who have lost their loved ones, their homes and families torn apart. May the gracious Lord give you the strength and wisdom to get through this devastating event,” Zoramthanga said on Tuesday. Tweeted around 4 am.
The deadly violence in Manipur is now entering its third month and has left a trail of devastation, leaving tens of thousands homeless and more than 120 dead, according to official figures.
“I wish not to see images and video clips of burning churches, brutal killings and all forms of violence, regardless of gender and age. If there is only one way to peace, will we take it? Many lives have been lost, bloodshed everywhere, physical torture has been inflicted and the victims are seeking shelter wherever possible.
There is no doubt that these victims are my kith and kin, my own blood and should we just keep quiet and let the situation go by? I don’t think so! I want to call for the immediate restoration of peace and normalcy. It is incumbent and imperative on the responsible and law abiding citizens or institutions of India to find immediate ways to restore peace.
Development with human touch and Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas also applies to my Zo ethnic tribes in Manipur! Zoramthanga added.
He added that 12,000 people have been internally displaced in Mizoram as a result of brutal violence in Manipur.
“The number of refugees and/or IDPs from Manipur, Myanmar and Bangladesh has crossed 50,000. I wish and pray that the central government provides us with immediate humanitarian assistance,” Zoramthanga said.
Mizoram has been facing a humanitarian crisis since the Myanmar military overthrew the civilian government in February 2021. Also, clashes between Kuki rebels and the Bangladeshi army mean that Mizoram is currently home to thousands of ethnic Kukis from both countries.
