Guwahati: The North East Indigenous People’s Forum (NEIPF) will submit a memorandum to the three-member committee set up by the Supreme Court to probe the Manipur ethnic conflict.
The decision was taken at the Executive Committee meeting of NEIPF hosted by Arunachal Pradesh Chapter held at Hotel Benjamin, Papu Nalla, Itanagar on Wednesday.
On August 7, the Supreme Court announced a three-member committee comprising former women High Court judges and 42 special investigation teams into the Manipur violence cases to restore confidence in the rule of law and Make sense.
The committee will be headed by former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Gita Mittal and includes former Bombay High Court judge Shalini Phansalkar Joshi and (former Delhi High Court judge) Justice Asha Menon.
The NEIPF meeting expressed grave concern over the simmering situation in Manipur since May 3 following clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities, which have left more than 150 people dead and thousands displaced.
NEIPF Chairman Anup Chetia said, “The meeting discussed at length the Manipur riots and expressed concern over the impact of recent trends in the cultivation of harmful substances including poppy plants in the Northeast region. Gone,” said NEIPF chairman Anup Chetia.
Chetia called for awareness among the local people of the area.
The meeting discussed a wide range of issues related to the indigenous people of the entire North East.
Following the International Day of Indigenous People theme, the meeting resolved to emphasize youth-oriented programs in the region based on ‘indigenous youth as agents of change’.
Realizing the need for youth engagement, NEIPF will strengthen state chapters and take initiatives to focus on ‘Climate Action and Green Transition for Justice’, ‘Mobilizing for Justice’ and ‘Intergenerational Connection’.
As an initiative, NEIPF will organize essay competitions and intellectual workshops for students and youth to create awareness among local people about their responsibility to preserve and protect traditional values.
Expressing serious concerns regarding the impact on the region’s environment, NEIPF appealed to all local people to ensure the preservation of traditional values.
Emphasizing on strengthening the state chapters, the executive meeting decided to engage all stakeholders to exchange ideas and involve local people in resolving inter-state boundaries.
Later, NEIPF Spokesperson and Secretary General N Ibungochoubi said the forum was concerned and disturbed by the socio-political development in the region, which has affected the normal life of the people.
He said that the Forum will implement the Diphupar Declaration, the resolution of the meeting held in Nagaland last year. He informed that preparation of indigenous people’s territory documents is in progress and NEIPF will seek help and advice from academicians and educational institutions.
As part of the meeting, NEIPF Chairman Anup Chetia launched Itanagar Today, a monthly publication and Mahabahu issue on climate change.
“We take serious notice as the younger generation will be affected by the trends and appeal to all local people to understand the irreparable damage to the future generations of the region,” Chetia said.
Thanking all the representatives of the states who have taken keen interest in participating in the meeting, he said that the initiatives of the forum are aimed at creating a strong base of local youth who will protect and preserve the great values of the region.
