On Imphal-Silchar route Oil tanker drivers call for indefinite strike

Imphal: Vehicles carrying petroleum products remained off the road on Wednesday as the All Manipur Petroleum Product Drivers Association (AMPPDA) protested after armed miscreants opened fire on an oil tanker being carried by the CRPF on NH 37. A strike was called for a fixed period between Imphal-Silchar.
The strike was called in protest against the attack on an oil tanker by AMPPDA and the alleged extortion of money by armed miscreants from drivers plying on NH 37.
AMPPDA Secretary Mukta Nongbri condemned the attack and said that the Center and Manipur governments have failed to ensure the safety of drivers.
He said that armed miscreants were charging Rs 500 per trip on NH 37 at Nungkao, Sibilong and Rengpang. In addition, there is a separate annual tax.
More than 200 oil tankers ply on this NH on a daily basis to supply petroleum products to the people of Manipur.
