Guwahati: On Independence Day, a group of women and young girls in Karimganj staged a protest, drawing attention to the pressing issue of women’s safety in India. The protest took place at AOC Point in the city, where the women gathered beneath the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The demonstrators lit lamps, played conch shells, and held placards, symbolizing their demand for true freedom and safety for women.
The protest was sparked by a recent incident at The Medical College in Razik, Kolkata, where the safety of women was reportedly compromised. The protesters used the occasion of Independence Day to question the reality of women’s freedom in India.
“It’s Independence Day, but are we, as women, truly free?” one of the placards read. The women highlighted their fears of venturing out at night, questioning the extent of their freedom in a society where safety is not guaranteed.
Their peaceful demonstration called for justice and appropriate punishment for those responsible for the incident in Kolkata, emphasizing that true independence can only be achieved when women can live without fear.
The protest in Karimganj reflects a growing frustration with the state of women’s safety in India and serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality and security.
