GUWAHATI: Appreciating the JK and Ladakh High Court for insisting on all safety measures to avoid electrocution deaths and injuries to consumers, a forum of graduate engineers in Northeast India said that electricity authorities And management often dismisses such incidents as mere accidents.
Taking serious notice of electrocution deaths (and injuries), the High Court recently ordered the formation of a committee to ensure implementation of statutory safety measures and regulations laid down in the Central Electric Authority’s Safety Regulations.
It also observed that such incidents occur due to non-compliance of safety measures and the huge loss of human lives (especially children) is totally unacceptable, serious and heartbreaking.
Supporting these views, the All Assam Engineers Association (AAEA) has drawn the attention of the authorities to the recent death of a 16-year-old Guwahati boy, Subham Kumar Roy, from Pandu area, who died at Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi Kshetra in Jalukbari. I was electrocuted. The high school student allegedly touched water from a fountain inside the campus and succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
“Official data shows that more than 11,000 people die due to electrocution every year in our country. According to the Assam Power Development Corporation Limited, Assam loses around 40 people every year,” AAEA said. said in a statement issued by President Air Kailash Sarma, Working President Er NJ Thakuria and Secretary Er Inamul Hye.
The statement further said that not only humans but also animals (wild elephants) are losing their lives due to electrocution in India. About 450 elephants are electrocuted in India, with Assam leading the way with nearly 90 deaths each, followed by Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
