
On duty Assam Rifles soldier in Ukhrul, shot himself with his rifle
Imphal: A 39-year-old jawan of the Assam Rifles allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle in Ukhrul district of Manipur, which borders Myanmar in the east, officials said.
Birendrakumar shot himself while on duty at the Assam Rifles camp in Sansak village in northeast Manipur and died of a bullet wound to the neck.
Fellow soldiers of the Sansak camp rushed to the sentry post after hearing the sound of firing at around 10 pm on Saturday night.
Surprisingly, Birendrakumar was found dead with the self-loading rifle allotted to him lying next to his body.
Sources said that the youth hails from Bihar, and his body is now at JNIMS hospital for post-mortem.
The motive behind his taking such extreme step was not immediately known, the official said.
The reason for the suicide is now under investigation and a case has been registered in this regard, police said.
