Aizawl: The Mizoram government on Thursday claimed that it is awaiting a response from its Assam counterpart on the claims made by the former regarding the inter-state border dispute.
Mizoram staked its claim on state boundaries in February.
“As agreed in the talks held in November last year, we conducted a survey along the border and presented our claims. It was decided that Assam should send a reply by April or May. We are yet to send them a reply. A reply has not been received,” said a Mizoram home department official.
He said that the date of the next round of border negotiations is yet to be decided.
During the border talks held on November 17 last year, the two states had decided that “Mizoram will submit a list of villages, their areas, geographical boundaries, caste of people and other relevant information within three months to support its claims.” will provide”, the official said.
It was also decided that regional committees could be formed from both sides to examine the claims so as to arrive at a peaceful solution to the disputed border issues.
Mizoram shares a 164.6 km long border with Assam, and the two states have had a long-standing border dispute.
The dispute took an ugly turn in July 2021 when police forces of the two states exchanged fire on the inter-state border, resulting in the death of six policemen and a civilian from Assam.
More than 60 people were also injured in the violent encounter in the disputed area near Vairengte village in Mizoram.
The two states have since held several rounds of talks and agreed to maintain peace on the border and resolve the dispute through dialogue.
