Aizawl: In response to Sunday, December 3, the state election counting date, in an emergency meeting, a committee of church leaders in Mizoram decided to submit a petition to the Election Commission of India to change the election dates.
In its request letter to the Election Commissioner of India, the MKHC mentioned that Sunday, the day of counting of votes, is a holy day for Christians and church worship services are held in all towns and villages. , abstain from secular and other commercial activities.
As a result, they want the ECI to change the date of counting of votes. He also said that apart from Sunday, he requested the ECI not to change the date to Saturday.
The Mizoram Church Leaders’ Committee, also known as the Mizoram Kohhran Heritage Committee (MKHC), is an alliance of various churches and denominations in the state of Mizoram.
After the Congress party, the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) also objected to the polling date, which is on Sunday, December 3.
Meanwhile, the general headquarters of the MNF party has sent a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar requesting to postpone the counting date to Monday i.e. December 4.
The Election Commission of India yesterday announced polling dates in four other states along with Mizoram. Mizoram will go to polls on November 7, and for all the five states that are voting, the counting date is December 3.
T.C Kaphminthanga MNF General Headquarters General Secretary mentioned in the CEC letter that Sunday is an important day for the Mizos as they are “100% Christians” and also that Sundays are church meetings in all the villages of Mizoram.
