
NSCN (K-YA) posed captain from Assam, held in West Bengal
Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal police have arrested a man from North Bengal for allegedly posing as the captain of the banned NSCN (K-YA) and extorting money from people, a senior official said on Friday.
Tarp Superintendent of Police (SP) Rahul Gupta said that the man was arrested from Sukna near Darjeeling on Wednesday in a joint operation.
The accused is a resident of Tinsukia district of Assam.
“A case was registered at Khonsa police station after we received inputs that extortion calls were being made to several people in Tirap from two phone numbers in North Bengal,” the SP said.
The officer said that a mobile phone and SIM card used to make such calls and bank account passbook were recovered from his possession.
“During investigation the accused admitted that he extorted Rs 2 lakh from various people. He also asked for bags of rice for NSCN (K-YA) party members,” the SP said.
He added that the man had a criminal record and was in jail in 2020.
