Non-Naga nominees for DMC, DNSU strongly opposed

Kohima: The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has reiterated its opposition to the inclusion of non-Nagas in the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC). In a statement, the DNSU expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s continued consideration of non-Naga nominations, despite previous appeals and commitments to protect Naga rights.

“We remind the state government that Article 371(A) is not a mere decoration, but a fundamental right secured through the blood and sacrifices of our predecessors,” said the DNSU, emphasizing that any attempt to undermine this provision would be met with “fierce resistance from the Naga people.”

The Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023, allows for the nomination of individuals with special knowledge to the DMC. However, the DNSU contended that there are “plenty of qualified locals who can fill these roles,” arguing that the inclusion of non-Nagas would be a “betrayal of the trust placed in our leaders and a threat to our very way of life.” They warned that allowing outsiders to participate as decision-makers would be “an act of self-destruction.”

The DNSU also called on the newly elected DMC members to prioritize the welfare of the Naga people, urging them to respect local sentiments and maintain peace and harmony. The statement concluded with a clear warning to the state government: “Any attempt to include non-Nagas in the DMC will be met with stern action from the DNSU and our tribal units.” The DNSU also appealed to non-locals to “respect our sentiments and refrain from interfering in our affairs,” emphasizing their desire to “exist in harmony.”
