No tickets for women married to non-tribals Mizo Zirlai Pawl warns
Aizawl: Mizoram’s apex student organization Mizo Zirlai Pawl has sent a warning to all political parties in the state not to give election tickets to any woman who is married to a non-tribal. The decision was taken after an executive meeting held at their general headquarters on Thursday.
Sources said that the MZP has said that it is opposed to the candidacy of any woman married outside the tribal community.
The MZP has further argued that some communities have been marginalized by more developed communities in their own lands, and they will not allow that to happen in Mizoram. The MZP’s opposition to the candidature of women married to non-tribals comes with the argument that it would polarize Mizo society.
The MZP has also said that if any political party violates this warning, they will be forced to take strict action.
The MZP’s order comes after the Election Commission of India (ECI) recently announced November 7 as the polling date for the 40-member Mizoram assembly. The counting date is set for December 3, with the results of the other four states also out.
It is worth noting here that political parties like Mizo National Front (MNF) and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) have already announced their list of candidates. According to sources, none of the female candidates announced so far have married non-tribals.
