NLFT and ATTF of Tripura declared unlawful alliance by Center

Agartala: In a decisive move aimed at curbing armed separatist activities and safeguarding India’s sovereignty and integrity, the central government has declared the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) as illegal organizations.
The declaration covers all factions, wings and front organizations affiliated to these organizations, for a period of five years, from October 3, 2023.
In a notification issued by the Home Ministry, the government has given its reasons for outlawing the NLFT and ATTF. Among the main arguments cited in the notification are:
The NLFT and ATTF have engaged in subversive and violent activities, undermining the authority of the government and terrorizing the people with the aim of separating Tripura from India and establishing an independent state.
Both organizations have maintained close ties with other illegal associations in the North-Eastern region, aiming to garner support for their separatist agenda.
Recent activities carried out by NLFT and ATTF have been characterized by violence and illegality, threatening the sovereignty and integrity of India. They targeted civilians, police and security personnel, causing casualties.
The NLFT and ATTF have resorted to extorting money from the public including traders and businessmen in Tripura to finance their illegal activities.
These groups established and maintained camps in neighboring countries for various purposes, including safe havens, training, and procurement of arms and ammunition.
The central government expressed apprehension that if immediate action was not taken to curb the NLFT and ATTF, they would increase their separatist, subversive and violent activities.
Furthermore, the government fears that these organizations may promote anti-national activities in collaboration with forces hostile to India’s sovereignty.
This announcement comes under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, and is intended to curb the illegal activities of the NLFT and ATTF, to ensure the safety and security of the area and its residents.
