Guwahati: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Assam and Meghalaya governments as well as the Union Home Ministry to submit a final report detailing the action taken in the gruesome Mukroh shooting incident.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) through its National Spokesperson Saket Gokhale had filed a case in the NHRC against the states of Assam and Meghalaya in November 2022 following the unfortunate and condemnable incident in Meghalaya’s Mukroh village where the Assam Police shot down Five civilians and a jungler were shot dead. The guard was killed in the counter attack.
On 21 February, the NHRC issued orders to the states of Assam and Meghalaya as well as the Government of India to submit a status report on the investigation into the matter.
On March 6, the Joint Secretary of the Home Department (Political) of Meghalaya submitted a report stating that the magisterial inquiry report on the Mukroh village firing incident is under scrutiny by the state government. And the one-member commission investigating it has been extended for another two months.
Subsequently, on 23 March, the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement stating that a meeting had been convened on 18 November 2022 with the Chief Secretaries and Government of Assam and Meghalaya. Assam was requested to finalize and implement the SOP and take necessary steps to prevent the use of lethal weapons against civilians/criminals.
A current status report on the matter is awaited.
TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale said in a statement that the inordinate delay in providing justice to the victims of the Mukroh firing is shameful and reflects the utter disregard of the Assam and Meghalaya government for the lives of the tribals of Meghalaya.
He added that it is shocking that the report of the one-member commission set up by the Meghalaya government is still pending and the deadline has been conveniently extended by another 2 months.
