Nagrota Bagwan (HP): New national record eludes Mirabai Chanu despite gold at weightlifting event. Olympic medallist Mirabai won the gold medal comfortably but could not improve her national record in snatch in the inaugural tournament of the Khelo India Women’s Weightlifting League here on Thursday.

The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist lifted a total of 191kg (86kg + 105kg) to take the top spot on the podium in the women’s event in the senior, junior and youth categories.
Gyaneshwari Yadav 170kg (78kg + 92kg) and former 45kg Asian Weightlifting Championship Gold Medalist Membrane Dalabehra 166kg (75kg + 91kg) finished second and third respectively.

After a successful lifting of 86kg, Chanu , 27, failed to lift 89kg in his second and third snatch attempts.

Her personal best in the national record and section is 88kg, which Chanu lifted during the 2020 National Championships.

Chanu is working to improve her snatch technique, which was once considered her weakness. She is consulting with Dr. Aaron Horschig, a former weightlifter who became a physical therapist and strength and conditioning coach in the United States.
The former world champion, who will be vying for a third Commonwealth Games medal in next month’s quarterfinals, has been hitting the 90kg mark for some years.
