Shillong: Golfers from Assam dominated the Shillong Golf Course, known worldwide as the ‘Gleneagles of the East’, winning five gold medals at the second North East Olympic Games in 2022.

The golf championship, which started on November 10, concluded on Sunday. Golfers from North Eastern states played 18 hole rounds in one day in the four day tournament on the challenging yet beautiful course.
In golf, apart from five gold medals, Assam won two silver and two bronze medals. Host Meghalaya was the second best performing state with one gold, six silver and four bronze.
Manipur bagged one gold and two bronze medals, while Arunachal Pradesh claimed one gold.

Assam bagged the team gold medal for the best four scorecard with the team of Snigdha Goswami, Jakir Hussain, Baki Dutta and Kalyan Sohol. Meghalaya won the silver medal. Manipur bagged the bronze medal.

The overall individual gold was won by Assam’s flamboyant Snigdha Goswami, ahead of Assam’s Hussain and Meghalaya’s KI Singh.
In the individual category, Meghalaya’s only gold medal was won by Jason Pasha as the state’s youngest golfer in the amateur division. Pasa started playing golf just two years ago after returning home to Meghalaya during the Covid-19 pandemic. Baki Datta of Assam and Jonathan Iofenio of Meghalaya went second.
Goswami won gold in the women’s event, with Meghalaya getting silver and bronze through Jyoti Aggarwal and Pooja Goenka respectively.

Manipur’s Kesham Indrajit Singh won the Super Senior event beating Meghalaya’s Hector Marvin and Assam’s Nagesh Singh.

Arunachal’s lone gold medal was bagged by Colonel Hemonto Pangang, who won the senior category ahead of Meghalaya’s Bennu Malakar and Manipur’s Lhunkhotang Hangsing.
Hussain won gold for Assam in the intermediate amateur category, while Meghalaya bagged silver and bronze through Singh and Gaurav Bajaj.

The professional category was won by Deban Bhumij of Assam, Anil Ram of Meghalaya was second and Deepraj Chetia of Assam was third.
