Brahmaputra Sailing Expedition
Guwahati: Major General Bhaskar Kalita, YSM, ADG NCC Directorate NER launched a sailing campaign as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of NCC at Pandu Port, Guwahati on October 26 – Lachit. raised the flag in II.
Brahmaputra sailing expedition, The campaign was flagged off on October 17 from Biswanath Ghar, Biswanath Chariali.
48 and 76 Senior Division and Senior Wing Naval NCC Cadets of Assam Naval Unit NCC participated in the campaign. The team covered a distance of 220 km in 10 days and passed through 05 districts before reaching Pandu Port, Guwahati on October 26.
The expedition team en route to Pandu Port, Guwahati stayed overnight at Silghat, Ship Ghat, Thelamara, Tengagauri, Baramari, Kashasila, Hatisila, Kurua and Lachit Ghat. Along the way, the team interacted with local people and spread awareness on various social issues viz. Drug Abuse, Daughter Protection, Daughter Education and Social Media – Advantages and Disadvantages etc. The team also carried out cleaning of river fronts as a part of Puneet Sagar Abhiyan and distributed garbage to various schools and colleges during the stops as social service and community development.
The campaign was organized with the aim of inculcating the spirit of adventure among NCC cadets and highlighting the contribution of NCC in nation building since independence.
The expedition was led by Lt Commander Rajesh Bhujeel, CO 49 UNNCC and assisted by Lt Commander Debanand Dole, CO 48 UNNCC as Safety Officer. Three No. 27-foot DK whalers, an IWT, an Army support vessel and two rescue boats from both units of the Naval NCC were part of the expedition. The expedition team was tested through unknown routes as few places like Thelamara, Tengagori and Baramari are not regular ports. In addition, the team also faced challenges imposed by Cyclone Satrang during the final stages of the campaign where the team completed the last two legs in continuous rain and strong winds.
The expedition allowed the Naval NCC cadets to explore the power of the Brahmaputra River as well as understand the importance of sustaining rivers for future generations. He also had a unique experience of understanding the life of the people living along the banks of the river which would help him in his future endeavours.
Brig Dinar Dighe, Gp Cdr, NCC Gp HQ Guwahati, Mr. Partha Pegu, Director, IWT Guwahati and Col Arvind Singh Thakur, CO 1 Assam NCC Bn also attended the event.
