Dimapur: A devastating fire broke out at Mao Market, one of the largest markets in Nagaland capital Kohima, around 4 pm on Monday, police said.
It is suspected that the fire started due to short circuit. The fire engulfed the entire market, panicking shopkeepers and visitors.
Several fire fighters were assisted to control the fire.
Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma reached the spot to supervise the rescue operation and coordinate with the local authorities.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in one shop and quickly spread to other shops due to strong winds.
No casualties have been reported yet and the extent of the fire damage is yet to be ascertained.
This incident has caused huge loss to the vendors who were running their business in the market for years.
Officials have appealed to people to stay away from the market area as rescue operations are still underway.
