KOHIMA: Despite having one of the largest number of political parties, the new Nagaland government is shaping up to be an opposition government with almost all parties extending unconditional support to the NDPP-BJP alliance that formed last month won the elections.
In the state assembly elections, the results of which were announced on March 2, pre-poll alliance partners NDPP and BJP won 25 and 12 seats respectively, for a total of 37 seats in the 60-member house.
Other political parties including NCP got seven, NPP got five, LJP (Ram Vilas), Naga People’s Front (NPF) and RPI (Athawale) got two each, JD(U) got one. And independent candidates have won four seats.
This is the first time that Nagaland is witnessing the victory of so many political parties in the state assembly elections. LJP (RV) and RPI (Athawale) are new entrants in state politics.
Although the NDPP-BJP has not yet staked a claim to form the government, it has received unconditional support from other political parties to continue its second innings.
Sources said that LJP (Ram Vilas), RPI (Athawale), JD(U) have already submitted letters of support to the coalition partners.
The NCP, which is the third largest party, on Saturday submitted a letter of ‘unconditional’ support to the Nephew Rio-led NDPP, newly elected NCP MLA Y Mahonbemo Humtsoe told on Sunday.
Similarly, NPF general secretary Achumbemo Kikon, one of the newly elected MLAs, said that although no final decision has been taken, the party, which has two members, “will support the government.” It’s likely.”
With all political parties supporting the winning NDPP-BJP alliance, Nagaland will have another all-party government.
In the past, in 2015 and 2021, governments formed less than the opposition during the current term of the government, but this will be the first assembly to be equipped with the opposition even before the House is sworn in.
