Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has conveyed the state government’s clear disapproval of the decision to end the FMR (Free Movement Regime) along the Indo-Myanmar border.
This reaction comes in the wake of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent comments on the closure of FMR (Free Movement Regime).
Speaking at the launch of ‘The White Owl Literature Festival & Book Fair’, Rio acknowledged that the lack of adherence to guidelines in the border areas has made the Northeast prone to insurgency.
He also acknowledged the Indian government’s security concerns.
Rio revealed that the state cabinet had decided to introduce regulations in response to the situation after a meeting on Thursday. Acknowledging the security concerns, he emphasized the state government’s determination to take necessary action respecting the sentiments of the people and the state, who are opposed to the abolition of FMR.
“We have heard the voice of the people, and that is why the state government is against lifting the FMR, and we are working on it,” he assured.
At the same time, reports indicate that the government led by Neiphiu Rio is planning to appeal to the central government to enact appropriate regulations and mechanisms for the cross-border movement of people.
The cabinet has also decided to request inclusion of concerned village council authorities in the comprehensive regulatory system of FMR.
