Naga house burnt by miscreants, Liangmei Council condemns

Manipur: Amid the ongoing fighting, unrest and violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur, the Naga community has become a target of increasing unrest.
A house belonging to the Naga community at Leimakhong Chingmang under Imphal West District was deliberately set on fire by miscreants. The Leimakhong Council, Eastern Zone has strongly condemned the act of arson and described it as inhumane.
During a press conference held at the Manipur Press Club on June 19, Liangmei Naga Council, East Zone member, Disubou Wijinamai, expressed their disappointment and gave details of the incident. Wijinamai said that as directed by the United Naga Council, the Naga community has remained neutral amid the ongoing unrest between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
However, to their dismay, a house belonging to the Liangmei Naga community was deliberately burnt down by suspected Kuki militants. The Council strongly condemned this heinous act.
Wijinamai further explained, “All the houses of the Liangmei community in Leimakhong Chingmang have their community name written on the gate as a fire precaution. The area is inhabited by a mixed population of Meitei, Kuki and Liangmei”.
Around five houses were set on fire last night, one of which belonged to the Liangmei Naga community, while the rest were owned by residents of Meitei. The fact that Kuki’s house was untouched indicates the involvement of suspected Kuki militants in the fire.
The council member called for an end to acts of arson that could exacerbate the current crisis. Further, Wijinamai raised questions regarding the lack of focus by both the state and central governments in resolving the ongoing unrest, stressing that the safety of the people is at stake.
Akhon Liangmei, whose house was burnt down, shared his heart-wrenching account. As a member of the Liangmei Naga community, which is not aligned with the Kuki or Meitei communities, she maintained neutrality during the ongoing unrest.
To prevent any untoward incident, he prominently displayed the name of his community in front of the house. However, despite these precautions, her house caught fire, leaving her homeless.
“I built this house with my hard earned money. But due to the unfortunate incident last night, I am now homeless. I sincerely appeal to the state government to end the violence and understand the dire situation. take appropriate measures for. I find myself in,” she pleaded.
