Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday assured proper investigation and justice to the protesting women in the mysterious death of a Manipuri housewife.
The incident took place at a residence near Manipur Legislative Assembly.
“The state government will conduct a necessary inquiry into the matter and necessary action will be taken against those involved,” Chief Minister N Biren told the representatives of the Joint Action Committee.
Notably, mystery surrounds the death of RK Ningol Laishram (o) Badiya Devi, a resident of Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai, Imphal.
The assurance was given when JAC representatives met the Manipur Chief Minister at his official residence on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister said in his Twitter post, “I am saddened by this sad incident and express my deepest condolences. The state government will conduct a necessary inquiry into the matter and necessary action will be taken against those involved.
Speaking to the media, JAC Co-Convenor RK Ongbi Tombisana said he urged the Chief Minister to quickly investigate and identify all those involved in the suspected murder case by April 27.
The body of the slain woman is still lying at the mortuary at RIMS, Imphal for post-mortem and inquiry but the JAC has refused to accept the body till a proper inquiry is conducted.
“It was a case of murder, not suicide, women are accused,” he said.
She had multiple marks on her body which indicated that she had been ‘tortured’.
The women met the Manipur Chief Minister on Tuesday after staging a dharna in Ningthoukhong’s native area as well as Thangmeiband, demanding strict punishment for all those involved in the case.
Manipuri housewife Laishram Bidya alias Devia, aged around 30 years, was found hanging in the bedroom of her house in Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai, Imphal on April 22.
She was the wife of Laishram Rocky and left behind a one-year-old daughter.
Police said that they have picked up six members of the family including the husband.
The protest was held under the banner, ‘We want death penalty for I. Rakhi Singh and his family member for the brutal murder of RK Laishram (O) Badiya Devi’.
Several women’s organizations including Ebendhou Mawam Lairembi Thougal Lup, Thangmeiband Youth Centre, Peace and Humanity Labor Youth Organization, Meira Paibi Lups, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, and local people participated in the protest sit-in.
