Myanmar is going to release 6,000 prisoners

YANGON: Myanmar’s military said on Thursday it would free about 6,000 prisoners, including a former British ambassador, a Japanese journalist and an Australian economic adviser.

A number of prominent figures were jailed in Myanmar after a military coup last year.
Among those released are former British ambassador Vicky Bowman, Australian economic adviser Sean Turnell and Japanese journalist Toro Kubota.
According to reports, these people will be released on the occasion of “National Day”.

In total, the army will release 5,774 prisoners, including about 600 women.

A former British ambassador, Bowman served as ambassador from 2002 to 2006.

She was detained with her husband in August after she failed to declare that she was living at a different address than the one listed on her alien registration certificate.

Both of them were later sent to jail for a year.

Similarly, many others must have been in prisons for a long time.
