Rongjeng (Garu Hills): Leader of the Opposition and former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has slammed the National People’s Party (NPP) and its allies for failing to recruit teachers in schools, leaving children in the state vulnerable. “Rejection of knowledge” is said.
He made this statement during the election campaign of Sengnam M. Marak, Rongjeng candidate of the party. Marak is a former MLA of the constituency and was in Rongchek Akong village to seek support for his candidate for the upcoming elections.
Mukal had earlier visited Mawshynrut in the West Khasi Hills and Phulbari in the West Garo Hills plains before coming to the East Garo Hills village to speak on behalf of his party member for voting. A crowd of about 1,000 greeted him in the remote settlement.
“This is the only state in the country where once a teacher retires, there is no recruitment. Due to this, schools are closed and children are deprived of education. The children we promised to provide quality education. tha have been deprived of them. This is despite the overall constitutional responsibility and the law that has been passed i.e. the right to education. Do you think such self-interested people will continue to lead the state in future? Can be held accountable,” Mukul asked.
He added that the NPP-led government’s move to stop recruitment was not only unethical and illegal but also unconstitutional.
Earlier during the meeting, the TMC leader said that he had approached the government on the issue of teacher recruitment and was told that it would be started only when all the recruitments were completed. When he asked for a temporary solution to ensure that children do not miss out on education, he said the only answer he got was that it would be done only after all recruitment was completed.
“Is this a joke with them? It is the future of our children that we are talking about. Won’t recruitment take time? We have seen that this government is trying to fill up the vacancies that are already there in the state. No and children are out of school because of it. Are these the people you want to vote for,” he asked the audience.
The small village is one of the remotest areas in the state and Mukul admitted that it was the first time he had visited, though he had tried once before but failed because the helicopter developed a technical fault. 2018 elections.
Countering the NPP’s claims that the TMC promises ‘V Card’ and ‘MYE Card’ as baaki (credit) cards, Mukul Sangma said that this would make his (NPP) mentality appears.
“Their preferences do not reflect the wider interests of the state. Democracy says that when a political party makes a pledge or promise in an election manifesto, it binds the political party to deliver if it gets the people’s mandate.” Implement and deliver on these promises and promises. This is the spirit of democracy. It is based on our understanding of governance and the challenges associated with it. If they want to know how we are going to do it, let them come. should join our political party,” Mukul said.
Further, he said that the support for AITC is evident everywhere and will stand them in good stead in the days to come.
Earlier, while addressing the gathering, Sengnam said that most of the development of Rongjeng constituency was initiated by the then Congress-led government of Mukul Sangma and he would work to ensure this development if the people in the constituency were to have a seat. Will help them again. Trust him again.
