Aizawl: Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Lalsawta on Thursday claimed that party leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit has increased the influence of the Congress in the state and strengthened the party.
Speaking to reporters after filing nominations for the upcoming assembly elections, the Congress president said that the people of Mizoram have given Gandhi a warm welcome.
The people of Mizo respect Gandhi a lot and are his admirers, he said.
“The visit of our leader (Rahul Gandhi) has created a wave. It has strengthened the party immensely and strengthened us,” said Lalsawta.
The former finance minister also said that his party is making massive efforts to establish good governance.
He expressed confidence that he will win from Aizawl West III seat in the upcoming assembly elections.
On fielding Meriam L. Hrangchal, whose candidature has been opposed by a student body because she married outside the Mizo community, Lalsawta said the Congress party had fielded her in the Lunglei South seat because she was not Considered to be an asset of Congress only. But for the state.
An influential student organization Mizo Zarlai Pawl (MZP) has strongly opposed the nomination of Mizo women, who are married to non-Mizos or tribals, and has requested all political parties not to field such women candidates.
Elections to the 40-member assembly of Mizoram will be held in a single phase on November 7 and counting of votes will be done on December 3.
A total of 116 candidates have filed their nomination papers till Thursday, election officials said.
Chief Minister Zoramthanga, who is also the president of the Mizo National Front (MNF), will file the nomination on Friday.
Friday is the last date for filing nomination papers.
