Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Wednesday announced that mobile internet services will be restored within 4-5 days.
The announcement was made when he was addressing his reception at the Ukhrul district headquarters in Manipur on Wednesday.
Ukhrul district is predominantly Naga populated and the powerful All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM) on Tuesday gave an ultimatum to the state government to lift the internet shutdown order within five days. Various types of protests will be initiated upon failure to next day.
Ban on mobile internet service in Manipur entered 159 days on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister said that the internet service will be restored if the law and order situation remains normal.
The state government banned mobile internet services in the backdrop of misuse by some individuals.
The state government has ordered to extend the ban on internet service till 7:45 pm. On October 21
Mobile internet was banned in the state on May 3 after violence broke out but was restored on September 23.
However, after clashes between police and students in Imphal, the ban was again imposed.
Meanwhile, ANSAM said in a statement that more than 158 days have passed since the internet was shut down in the state and the order has been partially lifted for certain users in the state.
Lifting the order at a higher rate for administrative purposes only for a few broadband users and government offices does not provide a solution to the needs in emergency situations and cannot justify the ongoing violence and the proportions of the existing situation.
